Hardwood floors bring warmth, elegance, and timeless beauty to any home—but keeping them looking their best takes a little know-how. Whether your floors are brand-new or well-loved, proper maintenance can help preserve their natural shine and extend their lifespan for years to come.

Here are our top tips for gentle, effective hardwood floor care:

1. Clean Gently and Often

Regular cleaning is the key to maintaining that fresh, polished look. But it’s important to use the right tools:

  • Sweep or dust daily with a microfiber mop or soft-bristle broom to pick up dirt, dust, and pet hair.
  • Vacuum weekly with a floor-brush attachment (avoid the beater bar, which can scratch).
  • Damp mop monthly using a barely-wet mop and a hardwood-safe cleaner.

Pro Tip: Never use a soaking-wet mop or steam cleaner—too much moisture can warp and damage hardwood.

2. Use the Right Products

Harsh chemicals and waxy polishes can dull your floor’s finish over time. Stick with products made specifically for hardwood:

  • Look for pH-neutral, water-based hardwood cleaners (like Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner or Method Wood Floor Cleaner).
  • Avoid vinegar, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners—they can strip or damage the finish.
  • When in doubt, test any product on a small, hidden area first.

3. Prevent Scratches and Scuffs

Scratches are one of the biggest threats to hardwood floors, but they’re easy to prevent with a few habits:

  • Place felt pads under all furniture legs.
  • Use rugs or runners in high-traffic areas like entryways and hallways.
  • Take shoes off indoors, especially high heels and cleats.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed to prevent accidental scratches.

4. Protect from Sunlight and Spills

  • Use curtains or blinds to minimize direct sunlight, which can cause fading and discoloration over time.
  • Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining or warping.
  • Add area rugs in sunlit spots for extra protection.

5. Refinish When Needed

Even with perfect care, hardwood floors may lose their luster over time. A professional refinishing every 7–10 years (depending on wear and tear) can restore their beauty and protect them from damage.
