For home owners that have pets we hear the following when we do home inspections before we clean:
While your intentions are good and I would have done the same thing, these actions could actually make it worse and I will explain.
If you do not have proper heat, agitation and chemical you will not be able to break the molecular bond of the urine to get it to release from the carpet.
If you have a Home spotter do not use it on the spot before blotting the spot with a towel otherwise it could end up making it worse by not fully extracting the water from the carpet and possibly flushing the urine deeper into the fibers. By rubbing, stepping on it with a towel or scrubbing the area you could actually force it deeper into the carpet fibers. If you just cover it with a towel you actually keep the spot wet allowing it to go deeper into the carpet.
If you use baking soda make sure you get it all out otherwise the carpet will get crunchy and can cause damage to the carpet fibers.
Be careful when buying store bought cleaners as most just give you the warm fuzzies of being cleaned but don't do the job.
Just like with any person or pet any byproduct (urine, Fecal matter) is a waste product. This can contain ammonia and Urea amongst other byproducts.
To properly clean and remove urine from your carpet there are a few things to know.
Your best course of action with pet urine is to gently blot the area with a towel until the area is as dry as you can get and if you are going to use a home spotter with a store bought product make sure you follow the directions on the bottle exactly as they are written, they designed the product and know how to properly use it. Also do your research to find the best product that is going to address your situation. I suggest Natures Miracle as it is not a harsh product for either your pet or carpet. When you have done all you can I would suggest to have a Professional Carpet Cleaner come to your home to properly treat and remove the remaining urine from your home.
